July 18, 2024 – As interest in cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabis-derived products for medical purposes continues to surge, researchers have unveiled a potentially groundbreaking use for CBD. A recent pilot study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that nano-encapsulated CBD (nCBD) cream may shield skin from ultraviolet A (UVA)-induced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage, thereby protecting against skin aging.

The Study at a Glance

In this prospective, single-center clinical trial, 20 participants were initially enrolled, with data from 19 ultimately analyzed. Participants applied either nCBD cream or a control cream (vehicle cream, VC) to each buttock in a randomized, double-blind manner. They were then exposed to varying doses of UVA over 30 minutes.

Why UVA Protection Matters

UVA rays, responsible for tanning, also contribute to DNA damage and skin aging. The Skin Cancer Foundation explains that all UVA exposure can harm DNA and potentially lead to skin cancer. Traditional sunscreens aim to protect against both UVA and UVB rays, the latter being more intense and damaging. The Environmental Protection Agency links UV radiation to melanoma, nonmelanoma skin cancer, cataracts, immune suppression, and premature aging.

Key Findings from the Study

Results from the pilot study indicated promising protective effects of the nCBD cream:

  • Erythema Reduction: At 24 hours post-exposure, 21% of participants showed less erythema (skin redness) on nCBD-treated skin compared to VC-treated skin.
  • Histological Benefits: The nCBD-treated skin exhibited reduced UVA-induced epidermal hyperplasia (skin thickening) and lower levels of cytoplasmic/nuclear 8-oxo-guanine glycosylase 1 staining, a marker of DNA damage.
  • Mitochondrial DNA Protection: nCBD treatment also mitigated mitochondrial DNA damage more effectively than VC treatment.

Significance of the Findings

“Topically applied nCBD cream reduced UVA-induced formation of a frequent mutagenic nuclear DNA base lesion and protected against mtDNA mutations associated with UVA-induced skin aging. This trial is the first to identify UV-protective capacity of CBD-containing topicals in humans,” concluded the researchers source.

Future Directions

While the findings are promising, larger studies are necessary to confirm these results and fully understand the protective mechanisms of nCBD. The study underscores the potential of CBD in dermatological applications and highlights the need for further research.
